Look for the Lumberjack!
At the bike ride, keep your eyes peeled for UW-Health Red’s Riders team member David Jaehn, or as you may have known WIG 2014 Bike MS Lumberjack bikehim last year, “Diaper Biker”. This year he is going as a lumberjack and will be sporting a cutoff flannel shirt, jean shorts, a beard and a red and black checked helmet. He will be riding a handcrafted bike made of two by fours. Click here to read more about David’s story.

New ‘I Ride With MS’ Program
The 31st Annual Bike MS: TOYOTA Best Dam Bike Ride introduces a new “I Ride with MS” program. This program is a way of honoring participating cyclists who identify that they have been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, which is believed to have a higher prevalence rate in Wisconsin. More than 60 riders have signed up for the program so far. Meet two of these inspirational riders below:

WIG Bike MS Jane SchmiedingJane Schmieding
It’s been 36 years since she was diagnosed with MS and Jane Schmieding feels she’s in the best shape she’s ever been in her life. Her secret? “My attitude that I can try just about anything.” That includes rock climbing, skydiving, rope courses, cross-country sit-skiing, kayaking and bicycling. She adapts each as needed for her MS, such as the hand-crank bike she borrows from her adaptive fitness instructor for rides in and around the Madison area. “I like the feel of moving along fairly fast,” she said. “I want to keep challenging myself to things that are a bit outside of my comfort zone and encourage others to do that, even if it’s walking to your front porch or your mailbox. I’m keeping all my parts in shape so they can start working together when myelin repair comes.”

WIG 2014 Bike MS Pam DvorakPam Dvorek
(pictured center)
Pam Dvorak was told that riding tandem with her husband Corey at their first Bike MS: TOYOTA Best Dam Bike Ride in 2010 would either make or break a relationship, don’t read anything into the fact that her goal is to ride by his side this year on a single-seat Wilier instead. “Since riding in my first Bike MS, I have realized I CAN do so many things even though I have MS.” Her four children, her husband, her fellow Flying Monkey teammates and even strangers along the route are her cheerleaders. “It is encouraging to hear ‘you can do it’ and I keep that in mind not only going up hills on the ride, but also when I am struggling with MS symptoms.”

A group photo of all I Ride with MS participants is planned at WCTC before the ride begins on Saturday (August 2). If you are part of the program and want to be in the picture, please meet at the team photo area, located outside the check in area south of the start line, at 7 a.m.

Thank you 2014 sponsors!
